

She was widely known for her pioneering work with all-day kindergarten and for her expertise in encouraging children’s natural creativity and curiosity. She taught young and old alike, from preschool Head Start, through graduate courses for educators at Cleveland State University, and in her work as a docent for the Cleveland Museum of Art. She was also the “handcrafts counselor” at Red Raider Camp. Her primary work setting was in the Euclid Public Schools where she taught for over 30 years. Dr. Rose was the recipient of many academic awards, including Cleveland Area Teacher of the Year, and grants from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, the Gund Foundation, and the Getty Foundation. She was invited by Harvard University Graduate School of Education to write for a children’s biography series: her book, “Clara Barton Soldier of Mercy” was originally published in 1960.
Dr. Rose is survived by her children Catherine Nauck (Terry), Carole Maddux (Jim) and Doug Rose (Terri); grandchildren Shea Scanlon Lomma (Jonathan), Jonathan Scanlon (Elspeth England), Kathryn “Katey” Maddux, Benjamin Schultz, Samuel “Bucky” Shultz, Randi Olmsted (Ricky), Justin Rose, Jordan Rose, and great-grandchildren Henry, Elizabeth, Matthew, Andrew and Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and daughter, Margaret Schultz.
A brief service will be held at the DiCicco and Sons Funeral Home in Mayfield Heights on Friday, May 28, at 1:30 pm. There will be a one-hour viewing prior to the service.
