EDWARD EDMUND MASAL was born on December 21, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Born Max Berg, Edward (Ed) took on the name of his stepfather who raised him and his sister, Esther, during their growing up years. He served in the Marines in World War II and married the love of his life, Betty (Newman). They raised two children, Ronald and Nancy. He proudly worked at Sears Roebuck & Co. over 30 years as an electronic repair manager. For a few seasons, he also worked as a Groundskeeper for the Cleveland Indians. The highlight was the 1948 World Series where he was affectionately called “Whitey” by pitcher Bob Feller because of Ed’s sun-bleached hair. Ed was the first family member to purchase a home movie camera in the 1950’s. His movies created lasting memories the family enjoys to this day. He often laughed that his movie making skills needed refinement as he frequently cut off the top portion of everyone’s head. After retirement, he enjoyed a simple life with family members. He also loved watching old movies, and retained a great memory for song lyrics. One he would often sing, especially to the young children in the family, was the Chiquita Banana Song from a 1950s commercial. It would always make everyone laugh. He also went to Solon Senior Center regularly for his 3 mile bike ride, sharing a cup of coffee with a friend, or to watch a movie. He also visited friends and family who were in assisted living situations, ready to lend a hand, as he often was the only one still driving. He sustained immense personal losses, including his daughter-in-law, Kathy, his wife Betty, sister Esther and most recently, his son Ronald, daughter Nancy and son-in-law Ray. He knew life was short and often remarked that he “doesn’t take life one day at a time but one minute at a time.” Ed is survived by Grandsons Ron Masal (Wendie), Christian Masal, Danny Seitz, Michael Seitz; Granddaughters, Barbie Fair (Mike); Dianna Jones; Great-Grandchildren Brandon Fair, Jarod Fair, Alexander Masal (Alexis), Andrew Masal (Olga), Ricky Jones (Kimm), Sari Topits, Matthew Seitz, Tori Seitz; Great-Great Grandchildren Sasha Rose and Maddie Rose; Niece Catherine DeSimone Cook-Templeton (Christopher), Nephew Joey DeSimone (Ute); Great Nieces Daniella Kelly (Josh), Nicole Powell (Aaron); Great Nephews Christopher Cook (Monica), Kevin Cook (Amber).
