Helen Rae Samstag, beloved art teacher, wise and loving aunt, and cherished friend passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025 in Newbury Township, Ohio, at the age of 88. Born Helen Rae Kane on April 20, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, she lived a life rich in creativity, connection and quiet strength.
Helen Rae pursued her education at Bowling Green University, where her passion for the arts began to take shape. This passion would go on to define her career and touch the lives of countless students. As an art teacher at Gurney School in Chagrin Falls, she was known for her remarkable ability to draw out the unique talents of each and every student. Her classroom was a place of inspiration and encouragement -- a space where young artists discovered their voices under her thoughtful guidance.
Beyond the classroom, Helen Rae found joy in the company of friends and the pleasures of leisure. She loved golfing with her close-knit circle and spent many happy hours at the yacht club. These moments reflected her appreciation for great conversation, laughter and life's simple joys.
Helen Rae now joins her beloved husband, Roget Samstag, after more than two decades apart -- a reunion long awaited by those that knew their deep bond.
Her memory will live on through those whose lives she touched with kindness, creativity, and unwavering support. May her legacy continue to inspire us all who had the privilege of knowing and sharing a good story and laughter with her. An Inurnment will be held on July 12, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH. Please join us in the community mausoleum chapel as our dear aunt, Helen Rae, joins her husband, Roger for eternity.
