Larry grew up in Newark, New Jersey, attending Chancellor Avenue Elementary School and Weequahic High School, where he began forming the friendships and intellectual curiosity that would shape his life. Larry loved learning and deeply respected his teachers, building lifelong friendships at every stage of his education. No one loved summer camp more than Larry, a joy that reflected his appreciation for community, camaraderie, and shared experience.
Larry went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was deeply inspired by the teachings of Professor George Mosse and was very active in the AEPi fraternity. He later earned his law degree from Rutgers University School of Law.
Larry was a proud member of both the New Jersey Bar and the Florida Bar and belonged to numerous fraternities and legal societies throughout his career. He was active in the Commercial Law League and the Bankruptcy Bar, earning the respect of colleagues for his legal knowledge. Over the years, Larry also generously represented many members of the Jewish community as a pro bono attorney, seeing service as both a responsibility and a privilege.

From his youth at Temple Ohab Sholam in New Jersey and the mentorship of Rabbi Prince, to his decades-long leadership role at Temple Emanuel in Miami, Larry was a devoted and active leader. He was also involved with synagogues in Asheville, North Carolina, and was a dedicated supporter of both the Jewish Community Center and Chabad.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marcia Pinkwater Schantz; his sons, Joel Schantz and his wife Avery, and Ari Schantz and his wife Alison; and his cherished grandchildren, Molly Schantz, Ruby Schantz, and Max Schantz.
