Mary Eugene “Jean” Atwell, age 87, of Middleburg, Florida passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024. She was born in Cypress, Florida to the late Albert and Lena Byrd. Jean was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert Gurney Atwell; brothers: Billy and Bob Byrd; grandson, Jonathan Atwell; and son-in-law, Bill Alexander.
Jean grew up in West Florida where she met the love of her life. As a Navy wife, she moved to California with Gurney where they started their family. Later they moved to Virginia Beach; eventually settling in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965. Jean worked at a large insurance company for over 20 years where she was a supervisor. In 1976, Jean and Gurney bought land in Middleburg, built a home, and later retired from their jobs and lived out their lives there.
Jean was the epitome of strength and grace. She is often referred to as the matriarch of her family. Her unwavering love, acceptance, and generosity was second to none. The family is heartbroken by her absence, but comforted knowing she is in heaven and reunited with her loving husband.
She is survived by her 4 children: Richard, Mickey (Karen), Katie, and Joy (Fred); brother, Joe Byrd; grandchildren: Amanda Tisdale (Brian), Stephanie Asble (Zack), Joshua Barnett, Lauren Truscello (Marcus); Brittany Atwell (Zack), Trey Alexander (Blair); Brian Allen and Joanna Palmer; great-grandchildren: Theron (Logan), Lily, Ava, Haleigh, Alyssa, Will, Harper, and Mikayla; a special kitty, Molly; and a host of extended family and friends.
Family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 PM on Monday February 26, 2024 at the funeral home. Funeral Services will follow at 3 PM at HARDAGE-GIDDENS HOLLY HILL FUNERAL HOME, 3601 Old Jennings Road, Middleburg, FL with Pastor Albert Byrd officiating. Burial will be at Holly Hill Memorial Park, Middleburg, FL.
