He was born in Montclair, New Jersey to the late Mildred and Ralph Michue. He attended Bloomfield Senior High School where he met his wife, Marilyn. He graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in Industrial Arts and Education.
In 1973, he married Marilyn and then together, moved to Charlotte in 1975 to begin his career with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, teaching at Hawthorne Junior High and Sedgefield Middle School.
He retired from CMS in 2014 after spending 24 years at Independence High School, teaching Drafting and Technology. He was described by one of the administrators as an ambassador of hope for many students. While teaching at Independence High, the football team won several consecutive state titles and he loved being part of it all. Whether it was shooting off the cannon after a touchdown for which he earned the nickname “Boomer” or driving the cheerleaders to their away games, he enjoyed being a part of the Big I.
As a 50-year member of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees), he enjoyed working the sound and lighting equipment for major events in Charlotte’s arenas.
Ray’s passion for Ford Mustangs led him to serve as President of the Carolinas Regional Mustang Club. You could always find him in his garage fixing up a Mustang or working on other projects. And, if there was a chance to drive a Mustang in a local parade, you could count on him to be there.
He was a faithful member of Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church for 44 years where he served in several roles. He was also a member of the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn Sands Michue; three daughters, Kimberly Allen (Jonathan) of Apex NC, Wendy Lynn (Micah) of Fort Mill SC, Kristy Monk (Michael) of Charlotte; five grandsons, Justin Allen (19), Connor Allen (16), Reid Allen (11), Grayson Lynn (10), Aaron Monk (6); 4 granddaughters, Addison Lynn (13), Reese Lynn (10), Emily Monk (9) and Avery Monk (6); and his adoring black lab, Maya.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Myers Park United Methodist Church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Humane Society of Charlotte 2700 Toomey Avenue Charlotte, NC 28203 and/or American Heart Association.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mcewenminthillchapel.com for the Michue family.
