Wilton was born on November 9, 1942 in Riesel, TX. He served in the United States Air Force and later graduated from Baylor University in Waco, TX. In his professional life, he worked for himself as a custom woodworker and had a gift for making original design fine furniture. Wilton also had a talent for photography and making things grow. Many of his family fondly referred to him as “the artiste.” Wilton loved being outdoors in his vegetable garden and watching for his cardinals and hummingbirds to come for a visit. In his 40s, he felt called to attend the Chapel for the Deaf Lutheran Church and taught himself sign language so that he could participate in services. A man of many talents, he liked a simple life – a good newspaper, interesting conversation, a home in the country, and a solid faith in the Lord. He was loved by more people than he knew and will be missed greatly for his humor, candor, and beautiful work.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Abel of Indian Trail, NC; his daughter, Melinda Woodbury, son-in-law, Trace Woodbury, and granddaughter, Ava Grace Woodbury all of Richmond, VA. His son, Paul Erick Abel, preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:30am at Forest Lawn East Cemetery 3700 Forest Lawn Drive Matthews, North Carolina 28104.
