11/28/1932 – 8/13/2024
Our dear, sweet mother and grandmother Adeline Irene Berman passed away from natural causes at the age of 91 on Tuesday, August 13, in West Hills, CA. Daughter of Louis and Leah Finesilver originally from Denver, Colorado, Addie was a native Angelina and lived her entire life in Los Angeles. She was the youngest of nine siblings and darling of the family. She came from humble beginnings and her family moved often. She first lived in Boyle Heights, an historic Jewish neighborhood, then in Hollywood, Venice, and Huntington Park. Despite childhood hardships, she prospered and started working at Barker Brothers in downtown Los Angeles when she was just 17, then rose to become a supervisor her second job at Credit Manager’s Association at the age of 24.
She was intelligent, beautiful, and had a deep sense of morality. It wasn’t long before she attracted the attention of many suitors, but finally settled on a young, handsome fellow from Seattle, Bobby Berman, whom she met at a Jewish dance and married in 1958. After that, she took business, psychology, general ed and art classes at local community colleges. She was an artist, painter, and crafter and loved to sing. She was on top of the fashion trends and always in style.
Addie especially treasured her role as mother of their three children, grandmother seven times over, and great grandmother of one. She volunteered at her children’s schools and encouraged many and varied educational, cultural and athletic endeavors. She celebrated all their birthdays and milestone events. She took many photos to capture cherished memories of them.
She returned to the working world upon the family’s move from Manhattan Beach to the west San Fernando Valley in 1973 at the Surprise Store where she got a discount on the latest fashions for herself and the kids. She went on to work in document control services at several aerospace companies and retired at the age of 67.
After moving to the Valley, she resumed taking classes at Pierce College, and it was there that she joined the Songbirds, then later at One Generation continued with the West Valley Cabaret Singers.
Addie was known for her warmth, laughter, optimism, and supreme planning and organizational skills. She was the keeper of family finances and queen of the calendar. She was the true matriarch of the family. Although she prepared meals and cleaned house as a proper 1950’s housewife of the times, she also embodied the values of feminism by working, educating herself, reading, and expressing her opinion.
Addie had many interests and hobbies: she loved art, music, animals, travel, and nature. She was also the hostess with the mostest! Until December of last year, she was active, driving around to do errands and attend luncheons with her Lovely Lady friends.
Bob and Addie were married for almost 66 years until his passing in January earlier this year. In their time together, they shared many joys, time with family and friends, travels, and adventures. Their shared interests included socializing with friends, celebrating holidays, graduations, and birthdays with family, and being involved with and attending Dixieland Jazz events, and of course cheering on the LA Kings.
We will miss our Momala with all our hearts and hold her memories dear.
A funeral & graveside service for Adeline will be held Monday, August 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Groman Eden Mortuary and Eden Memorial Park, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 91345.
