Lorri Michelle Bernson (née Berman) was born to Dania Avol Berman and Wallace Berman on June 12, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, where she lived her entire life. On November 23, 2025, the world became a little emptier and a lot sadder.
Lorri was a charismatic and dynamic force, never settling with the ordinary. She dreamed big, pushed boundaries, and inspired everyone around her to see possibility where others saw limits. Early in her career, she worked as a buyer for Gerber Children’s Clothing, quickly proving herself invaluable and showing her colleagues what the organization could be, not just what it was. Later, as Merchandise Licensing Director for Paramount Studios, she handled immense responsibility with creativity and innovation, continually expanding the role and finding new opportunities for growth.
In her early thirties, Lorri lost her vision as a result of Type 1 diabetes, which she had battled since adolescence. This loss forced her to step away from her career and her independence behind the wheel, but never from her purpose. Determined and resilient, Lorri redefined what was possible once again. She met and married Steven Bernson, and though the marriage later ended, they remained close friends.
Lorri’s life took on new meaning when she found Guide Dogs of America (GDA), an organization that provides trained service dogs as well as training for the new owner at no charge. What began as training with her first guide dog, Nigel, evolved into a lifelong mission. Lorri became one of GDA’s most passionate advocates appearing on television, organizing events, raising awareness and funds, and ultimately becoming the face of the organization. She organized and put on many fundraisers. Most notably, she created and transformed Ride for Guides, which started as a small motorcycle fundraiser, into a major source of awareness and financial support for this worthy cause. She even made history as the only blind individual to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game guided only by her remarkable sense of sound and spirit.
Lorri’s charisma as a spokesperson for GDA caught the attention of Hollywood once more, as she was approached to serve as a voice description artist and advisor for the hit television series In the Dark, whose lead character was inspired by her wit, independence, and unbreakable strength. Lorri traveled with the production to lend authenticity to the portrayal, forming a lasting friendship with actress Perry Mattfeld (“Murphy”). Like the main character, Lorri was never a “blind person”; she was an extraordinary person!
Lorri had a gift for connection. Whether speaking with a store clerk, a celebrity, or a major donor, she made everyone feel seen, valued, and remembered. Her warmth, humor, and genuine curiosity left lasting imprints on the hearts of everyone she met.
Lorri will be deeply missed by countless people and remembered as the most wonderful and amazing person they ever met. Those fortunate enough to be her closest friends (Karen, Debbie, Sue and many others) grieve not only the loss of a friend, but of a lifelong presence woven into every part of their lives. She was “Auntie Lorri” to their children, who adored her and grieve her loss as well.
Lorri’s shared an extraordinary bond with her mom, Dania, who was her “Rock” and her life support system and Lorri provided the most amazing love and care especially when Dania needed it at the end of her life. They were truly inseparable!
To those of us lucky enough to be her family, she has left a life-sized hole in each of our hearts; her brother and support system, Larry Berman, her sister-in-law, Cyndie, and her beloved nieces, Ashley (Briggs) Ahearn, Alexis (Hunter) Trotman and Alyssa (Alex) Berman. She has left behind her precious grandnieces, Olivia, Ella and Mia, and her darling grandnephew, Rowan. Lorri is also mourned by her beloved aunt, Betty Persion as well as many other relatives.
The family is grateful to her doctors, as well as Vonni, her invaluable helper. We are forever grateful as well to Nigel, Carter, and Captain, her precious eyes, security, endless love and “eyes” to her world, as well as those who cared for them along with her.
Lorri’s light was extinguished far too soon, but her legacy of courage, compassion, and connection will shine forever.
Rest in Peace, Beautiful Soul. We will love and miss you always!
