Around the age of 18, she married Eliyahu Morag, and they had a son, Giora; they lived on a Kibbutz in Nitsanim. In 1948, the country was in turmoil due to the war, and the Kibbutz they were living in was attacked by the Egyptian Forces. All women and children were ordered to evacuate. The fighters of Nitsanim were outnumbered 10 to 1 by the enemy, and the few that survived were taken as POW's to Cairo, Egypt. Miriam's husband, Eliyahu, was among the men captured, and upon his return from captivity, the couple divorced, and Giora stayed with his father on the Kibbutz. Miriam was also involved in the Israeli Underground, fighting for Israel's independence. Following her divorce from Eliyahu, Miriam never stopped reaching out to her son Giora, whom she loved with all her heart, and thought of everyday.
Miriam then moved to Tel-Aviv, where she met Michael Markheim, whom she married. They had a daughter, Shoshana (later known as Suzie and Susan). Michael was a Holocaust Survivor from Krakow, Poland. He had escaped a concentration camp in Poland, and made his way to Israel, where he started a new life with Miriam. Like most of the Jewish youth of Palestine, and the new arrivals from the European Death Camps, Michael and Miriam served in the pre-state underground.
In 1957, Miriam, Michael, and Susan, moved to Los Angeles, in order to reunite with Michael's brothers, Jean, David, and Marion. They were very happy, and lived in Van Nuys, California. In 1961, Michael passed away, and Miriam was left to raise her daughter, Susan, as a single mother. Michael was her one true love, and her soul mate.
She was an extremely hard worker, providing for her and her daughter as a single mother. She managed a 25 unit apartment building, while also working as a waitress at Nate N' Al's. Miriam did her very best to make sure her daughter Susan had everything that life had to offer, as she was her pride and joy, and loved her more than life itself. Miriam was a very strong, independent woman, with love in her heart for everyone.
Miriam is survived by her loving daughter, Susan; cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren: Simone, Sidney, Stewart, Spencer Richlin, Reina and Stephen Markheim; Dotti and Marti Spector; and her son, Giora Morag; and his children, Gali, Yair and Maya Morag of Israel.
She passed on Sunday, September 7, 2014, at the Jewish Home For The Aging. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, September 11, 2014, at 11am, in the Groman Eden Chapel of Groman Eden Mortuary. Services will be officiated by Rabbi Haim Beliak, and will conclude Graveside in Eden Memorial Park.
