Robert Berliner passed away in his sleep after a brief illness on March 21, 2024 at his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He was 88 years old. He attended CCNY, obtaining a degree in chemistry, followed by a degree in law from the Detroit College of Law.
Bob became a pioneer in biotechnology patent law, and practiced for 57 years, including as a founding member of Robbins, Berliner & Carson, then as a partner with Fulbright & Jaworski, and later as a partner with Brooks Cushman.
A founding member of Breathe Southern California, Bob dedicated nearly fifty years to addressing lung health issues. In 2007, President Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation presented him with the President's Volunteer Service Award. In 2010, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs presented him with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.
Bob had the gift of making friends of family, and making a family of his many friends. He is predeceased by Barbara Berliner, his wife of 47 years, and is survived by his significant other Sandi Kramer, his two children, Steven Berliner (Laura Andrews) of New Orleans, Louisiana and Julie Hoffman (Allen Hoffman) of Vienna, Virginia, and his three beloved grandchildren, Felix and Rebecca Berliner and Danny Hoffman.
In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to honor Bob’s memory with a charitable gift to Breathe Southern California (https://www.breathesocal.org/).
