Sanford A. Tisherman, M.D. of Moorpark, CA, passed away on January 03, 2014 at the age of 73. Doctor Tisherman was raised in Crescent Heights and Encino. After completing pre-medical studies at UCLA, he attended Jefferson Medical College of the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia from 1961 to 1965, the same medical school from which his father, Robert Carl Tisherman, M.D. graduated in 1931.
Doctor Tisherman's internship was at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles, followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles (now called Cedars-Sinai Medical Center). After completing residency, he served in the United States Air Force at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1970 to 1972.
Doctor Tisherman was in private practice as an obstetrician/gynecologist in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles from 1972 until his retirement on December 31, 2004. He was a senior attending physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Doctor Tisherman was a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was also an Associate Clinical Professor of OB-Gyn at UCLA for more than 30 years.
After living in Encino for 32 years, Doctor Tisherman and his wife, Flora, retired to Moorpark, California; he loved the rural atmosphere, tending to his garden everyday and walking his beloved German Schnauzers Maggie and Sophie every morning. He was so very passionate about UCLA sports, especially basketball, attending every home game for more than twenty-five years. Every morning he read the Sports Section, reporting everything about UCLA sports; he especially loved women's volleyball and basketball and watched every women's basketball game for many, many years.
Doctor Tisherman and Flora were married for 38 years; they studied a bit of astronomy together; the idea of endless space was solved by their concluding that there was a white picket fence somewhere out there, and they would be reunited at the picket fence gate. Until then, my love.
His daughter Elizabeth and Flora are heartbroken. Doctor Tisherman is also survived by his adored nephew, Joel Ervin of Albuquerque, New Mexico as well as Todd Weprin, Elizabeth's husband, and their two beautiful daughters, Allie and Marlie, who all reside in Delray Beach, Florida. Godspeed, my precious love.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in Dr. Tisherman’s honor be made to an animal rescue organization of your choice. Services will be held Sunday, January 05 at 2:00 PM at Eden Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Groman Eden Mortuary, Mission Hills, CA.
