She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful wife for over 66 years. Born to the late Louise and Harold Learch, she is predeceased by her siblings James, Freddie, Butch, and Donna. Dawn learned hard work while still in high school and met Robert (Bob) Stanley Young, her future life-long love, while working at a diner in Rochester, NY. They got married in Charleston, SC in 1958 and began raising a family while traveling the country with Bob’s work assignments.
To her family, Dawn was the heart and soul of their home. As a devoted wife, mother, and family accountant, she poured her life into cooking, cleaning and sewing to feed and clothe her family. She instilled work ethic and a drive for excellence into her children who all graduated with degrees from North Carolina universities and have had successful careers. She loved playing all manner of games, doing puzzles, and reading with her children. In later years, she began collecting books, porcelain dolls, decorative jewelry and hats. She was a great cook and passed on delicious recipes to her children. Her grandchildren and more recently, her great-grandchildren brought her so much joy. She cherished every moment spent laughing, sharing stories and celebrating life milestones like graduations, weddings and births.
Dawn’s love extended well beyond her family. She was a faithful member of her church for over 59 years. She was active in her Sunday School class and WMU and sent cards out regularly to celebrate special events and encourage the sick with get well wishes. Whether she was teaching children, lending a helping hand in the kitchen, or simply being a source of comfort, she lived out her faith in beautiful and humble ways.
She is survived by her beloved husband Bob Young, and their children: Bob Jr. (Anna), James (Meshael), Pete (Sonia), and Tina (Mike). She leaves behind a legacy of love in her grandchildren: Aicacia, Nolon, Alicia (Eric), James Jr. (Susanna), Savannah (Ben), Nina, Stephanie, Matthew, Jake (Camilyn), Zach, and Luke, as well as her great-grandchildren: Scarlett, Fiona, Atticus, Magnolia, Avery, Graylyn, and Carter. She will also be missed by many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were forever touched by her kindness and grace.
