She was born on February 4, 1947, in Fort Knox, Kentucky but moved to Monroe, North Carolina when she was a toddler. Della graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1965 and upon her graduation went on to get her cosmetology license. She later went to work in the cafeteria at Forest Hills High School to be home with her children when they were out of school. As her children got older, Della went to work for Bloomsberg Mill. Della had many hobbies and interests in her life including sewing, cross stitching, puzzles, word searches, reading, and listening to music. She loved watching westerns and classic movies, including anything with Elvis Presley. She also enjoyed travelling and loved collecting items of interest and souvenirs from her trips. Della also enjoyed gardening with her family, growing her own vegetables, and was a fantastic cook. More importantly, Della accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior when she was in her early twenties. She made Christ a priority of her life and always wanted to make sure her children were brought up in church and had a Christian education.
Della is preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Nellie Sherrin; and ex-husband, Henry Ray Smith. She is survived by her children, Michael Smith (Tammy), Cindy Hartis (David) and Melanie Halcom (Scott); grandchildren, Jennifer Stegall (Garrison), Sean Smith, Caleb Hartis (Cecily), Jacob Hartis (Samantha), Stephen Hartis, Jordan Hawkins (Kathleen), Samantha Hilton, and Mason Halcom; and 10 great-grandchildren.
