
He was born on November 25th, 1944, in Hollywood, Florida. Ervin received his Bachelor of Science degree at Florida A&M University in 1966. After graduating college, he was drafted into the military where he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After Vietnam, Ervin continued to serve in the military where he was stationed in Germany from January 1974 to November 1974. He later retired from the Army on January 9, 1990, as an E7 (SFC) Sergeant First Class Platoon 3. Ervin received many accolades and service medals during his time in service. They included an Army Service Ribbon / Overseas Service Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; 3 Vietnam Service Medals; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; 2 Good Conduct Medals; 4 Army Commendation Medals (1978, 1981, 1982, 1988); 3 Developmental Ribbons; and The Meritorious Service Medal. He also served as a Non-Commissioned Officers Professional as well as a Finance Specialist and performed the playing of Taps for 8 years on the French Horn. He later received a Certified Lay Speaker Certificate on April 20, 2007.
Aside from his honorable service in the military, Ervin was also a very active and faithful member of Wingate United Methodist Church. He served in various ministries of the church including teaching Sunday School, organizing the Community Garden, and ministering to the college students. He also chaired the Mission Program (Loaves and Fishes) of the church as well as the Administrative Council, Aquaponics, and the annual Thanksgiving meals that were taken to the senior community. Ervin had a caring and giving heart as was evidenced in the work in he did in his community. Whether it was mowing a yard, tilling a garden, or simply running errands, Ervin had a heart of gold and is truly going to be missed.
Ervin is preceded in death by his mother, Connie Bunton; and brother, Larry Hamilton. He is survived by his niece and caregiver, Patricia Garmon; Godchildren, Marquise Evans and Patrick Shine; God-grandchildren, Icelynn Shine, Izreal Shine, Bella Evans, and Noa Evans; and sister, Cynthia Bunton.
A Celebration of Ervin’s life with military honors will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Wingate United Methodist Church, located at 111 Hinson Street, Wingate, North Carolina.
