Josie Hayes Helms

She was born on November 18, 1928 on Hayes Road. She graduated from Indian Trail High School in 1948. She was the daughter of the late Herman Nelson and Eula Yandle Hayes. Josie was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Hayes. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Stokes (Byron); her granddaughters, Shara Duke (David), Samantha Reynolds (Bruce); five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Maddie, Tristan, Ellie Jo and Josie Rae; her sister, Shirley Griffin and by her nephew, Hayes Griffin (Becca) of Georgia.

She faithfully worked at Belk on Main Street for many years, then went to work at the Monroe Mall Belk. Josie loved spending time with her family and making memories with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was sassy, had a quick wit about her and was not afraid of anyone. She was a long time member of Shiloh Baptist Church and Ladies 3 Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until 2:00pm Sunday, April 3, 2022 at Shiloh Baptist Church. A service to celebrate Josie’s life will begin at 2:00pm in the church sanctuary. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, 2301 N. Rocky River Road, Monroe, NC 28110. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is honored to serve Josie’s family.
