
He was born on March 5, 1947, to the late James and Margaret Fordham Freeman.
Richard served honorably in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He later served in the motorcycle unit of the United States Park Police for over 30 years. After retiring, Richard went back to work for the Park Police where he worked as a civilian dispatcher. He was very artistic and was a published author and illustrator. Richard was also a man of prayer and consistently led a prayer call every morning for 5 years before his passing.
Along with his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Melvina Freeman, whom he married on October 7, 1967, and was married for 51 years. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Turnage; grandchildren, Michael Turnage and Emily Turnage; brother, James Freeman, Jr., sister, Lynn Dyer; nephews, Christopher Dyer and Andrew Freeman; and niece, Dawn Staub.
Services for Richard will be held on Monday, April 14, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Garden, located at 3702 Loren Drive, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
