Born with a natural gift for mechanics, Ronnie spent his life doing what he loved—working on cars and motorcycles, turning wrenches, and bringing engines back to life. His passion for fast cars, open roads, and the roar of a motorcycle was matched only by his love for the Smoky Mountains, where he and his wife, Genia, spent countless hours riding the winding roads together.
Tank was a gun enthusiast, an avid camper, and a man who cherished time spent with family. Above all else, he was defined by his unwavering devotion to the people he loved—his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. His heart was big, his loyalty fierce, and his presence impossible to forget.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Genia Howell Schaffer; his children Stacey Smith (Jeremy), Darren Howell, Amy Phillips, Daniel Schaffer (Stephanie), Beverly Baucom (Michael), and Brittany Huthsing; 21 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Barbara Howell, aunt Patsy Knox, and his “brothers from another mother” Robert T., Tommy L., Rocky S., Joe S., Willie R., David J., and Tom M.—men who stood by him through thick and thin. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Tank was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ronald Wilson & Shirley Jewell Schaffer, sister Beverly Glander, brother Randy Schaffer, Grandfather Lester Jewell, and father-in-law Jerry Howell.
A celebration of Ronnie’s life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Midway Baptist Church, located at 4615 Olive Branch Road, Wingate, NC 28174. Family and friends are invited to gather, remember, and honor a man whose impact will be felt for generations.
Tank lived boldly, loved deeply, and rode freely. His spirit will forever echo in the rumble of an engine and the laughter of the family he adored.
