

Colonel Basil Manly, III, USAF, Retired, 80, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, May 5, 2011 after an extended illness. Col. Manly devoted his life to his three loves, his family, his country, and his Savior, Jesus Christ. Col. Manly was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Lucy Black Manly; his son, Basil Manly, IV and Jill, Montgomery, AL; his three daughters, Cynthia Manly, Montgomery, AL, Karen and Paul Pabich, Colorado Springs, CO, and Anita and Brett Mayhew, Montgomery, AL; eight grandchildren, Allison, Ashley, Christopher, Connor, Courtney, Kaitlyn, Stephen and Zachary; and two great grandchildren, Lorelei and Parker. Col. Manly was preceded in death by his parents, Basil Manly, Jr. and June Williams Manly. After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1952, as a Distinguished Military Graduate, Col. Manly spent the next 30 years serving in the USAF and traveling the world. His distinguished career traversed two wars, Korea and Viet Nam, and several overseas tours including, Japan, Okinawa, Greece, Philippines, and Viet Nam. During his last duty assignment, before retiring in 1982, Col. Manly held the position of Vice Commander of the AFLC International Logistics Center at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Col. Manly’s decorations include the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. Since they moved to Montgomery ten years ago, Basil and Lucy have been active members of Vaughn Forest Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Jackson Hospital, Amedisys Hospice, and HealthSouth Rehab Hospital for their excellent care. The Family will receive friends at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home, on Sunday, May 8, 2011 from 4 to 6 p.m. Col. Manly will be remembered at a celebration of life service to be held at the funeral home following visitation. His burial service will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 10:15 a.m. Memorial donations can be made to Vaughn Forest Church Building Fund or to Hospice.
