Longtime Montgomery resident, John Russell Bell (“JB”), died peacefully in his sleep November 20, 2015 at the age of 65. John is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years Sharon, his two sons Neil (Amber) and Scott (Tiffany), and his beloved granddaughter, Eliza Cate Bell. John was excited about the upcoming arrival of twin grandchildren, Clark and Ruby.
Born in Louisville, KY and raised in South Bend Indiana, John was preceded in death by his father, Russell O. Bell and is survived by his mother, Elizabeth C. Bell (Southern Pines, NC), brother Tom (Ellen) of Lewis Center, OH, sisters Mary Risen, Marty Prevatte (Terry) and Ann Bell, all of Southern Pines, NC. John also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and close family friends. Growing up in South Bend, John was a big fan of the Fighting Irish and his sons’ alma mater of Auburn was a close tie.
Graduating from Appalachian State University left John with a lifetime love of the mountains. Returning to Boone often over the years with family and friends was something John always cherished. John and Sharon thoroughly enjoyed the traveling they’d do with their close “group” of friends with John often (and excitedly) taking on the role of “social coordinator”.
John was a PGA Golf Professional for over 35 yrs. He was the head professional at Rolling Hills 30 years ago (Cottonwood Golf Club). He owned and ran the old Colonial Acres (Magnolia Club) for many years and worked at Bonnie Crest before returning to Cottonwood about 5 years ago. The golfing community and his many friends will miss him dearly!
He loved a good, crackling fire in the fireplace like no one else and John LIVED for the Christmas season. Christmas shopping for family and watching them open presents was one of John’s favorite things to do. He’d begin listening to Christmas music as early as September. John would spend special time and attention to selecting the perfect Christmas tree and each year’s seemed bigger than the last.
JB’s good heart and big personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Vaughn Road this Monday evening, November 23, 2015, from 5:30-7 followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Patrick Driscoll officiating and Deacon Jim Labadie assisting.
In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org.
