Dr. Lois Letita Johnson of Montgomery, AL was called to her eternal home on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, AL. She was born on December 8, 1951, in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Rev. Brice and Delores Thompson Sr. She was the youngest of three children.
FAITH
As the daughter of a pastor, she was God fearing and accepted Christ at an early age. Under the tutelage of her father, Rev. Brice L. Thompson Sr., she quickly found her place within the LCMS Lutheran Church. As a life-long member of United Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Montgomery AL (formerly known as Trinity Lutheran Church), she served in various roles throughout the years, including church secretary, pianist, choir member, and lead vocalist.
FAMILY
In 1976, she married the love of her life, Carl Anthony Johnson, Sr., with whom she shared many memories. To this union, one child was born, Carl Anthony Johnson Jr. They established a home life in Montgomery, AL. Together, they built a family on solid principles such as faith, community, and service over the course of their 43 years of marriage.
SERVICE
Dr. Johnson developed an affinity for education at an early age, gaining inspiration from her mother, Delores C. Thompson, who served as a Lutheran School teacher and administrator for several years. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1969. Later, she expanded her educational background by completing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Huntingdon College, Montgomery, AL; a Master’s Degree in Education from Troy State University, Montgomery, AL; and a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, Ft Lauderdale Florida.
During the course of 36 years as an educator, she served the Montgomery Public School System in various capacities. Her dedicated service included, Elementary School Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Federal Programs, and Assistant Superintendent of Student Services. In addition to her direct occupational assignments, she volunteered as a grade level chairperson and mentor for new teachers and administrators. As an advocate of education, she strongly believed that education is the key that opens doors to opportunity. Her career goal was to provide exceptional educational service and leadership for both youth and adults in the Montgomery community.
Dr. Johnson served her community with dynamic mentorship and leadership skills. She was a member of Haardt Estates Neighborhood Association, Phi Delta Kappa ASU Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and she was recognized in Cambridge "Who’s Who: 101 Top Industry Experts." In addition, she served on the Council of Chief State Officers, and the Council for Leadership in Alabama Schools (CLAS). She was also a participant in the Alabama Federal Programs Organization, acquiring over 5 million dollars in grants for children within Montgomery Public Schools.
During the latter part of her life, Dr. Johnson was faced with many challenges concerning her health, but remained faithful that God would not put any more on her than she could bear. She fought a good fight, finished the course, and through it all, she kept the faith.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother: Rev. Brice L. Thompson Sr. and Mrs. Delores C. Thompson.
She leaves to cherish precious memories: her loving and devoted husband, Carl Anthony Johnson Sr. Montgomery, AL; a loving son, Carl Anthony Johnson Jr. (Jorielle), Montgomery, AL; one brother, Brice L. Thompson Jr. (Sadie), Montgomery, AL; one sister, Marilyn A. Johnson, Philadelphia, PA; one sister-in-law, Sandra Nelson (Eugene), Detroit, MI; one brother-in-law, Roy Johnson (Ora), Las Vegas, NV, as well as many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
