Lucy Black Manly went to be with her Lord on February 20, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Lucy was born in Clarksville, TN on March 10, 1935. After graduating from high school, she moved to Nashville to study nursing. While working as a nurse in Nashville, Lucy went on a blind date with USAF Lt. Basil Manly III. After several months they were married and began a journey that took them around the world. Over the next thirty years they would live in Okinawa, Japan, Athens, Greece, the Philippines, plus several locations within the United States. Lucy took pride in serving her country as a devoted wife of a U.S. service member. Finally, they settled in Montgomery, AL to be close to family. No matter where they lived, Lucy’s warmth and fun-loving nature made their home the place to be no matter whether you were a neighbor or a visiting foreign dignitary.
Lucy loved her Lord and her family. She was a devoted member of Vaughn Forest Church for nearly 20 years, although she has been unable to attend during the past several years due to illness. Lucy was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was affectionately known as “Nana” by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lucy is survived by her loving and devoted children, Basil Manly, IV (Jill), Cynthia Manly, Karen Pabich (Paul), and Anita Mayhew (Brett). Also, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Allison, Ashley, Christopher, Connor, Courtney, Kaitlyn, Stephen, and Zachary; and six great-grandchildren, Beckett, Holden, Jude, Lorelei, Oliver and Parker. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Basil
Manly III, her parents, Sidney and Willie Mae Black, brother, Lurton Black, sisters, Lorene Black and Geneva Shelton, and granddaughter, Brittany Anne Mayhew.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Jackson Hospital and Amedisys Hospice of Montgomery for their excellent care.
Due to the COVID-19 virus concerns, a graveside service for family only will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo on Friday, March 5 at 1:15 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lucy’s name can be made to Vaughn Forest Church, First Baptist Church Community Ministries, or Hospice.
