

MARTIN, Sam Maxwell, rode away into the sunset on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. He was born in Tallapoosa County on November 27, 1923. He was preceded in death by his parents Dewitt Martin and Emma Smith Martin; siblings Ludger D. Martin, Joan Whitmire, Verna Reaves, Jeanette Ward; and son-in-law Ken Bryan; granddaughter Anna Grace Bryan. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ellen Caldwell Martin; daughters Sandra Martin Lee, Sharon Martin Bryan, Susan Martin Wallace (Gary); grandchildren Jeffrey Parsons, Timothy Parsons, Joshua Bryan and Hope Wallace. After he graduated from Hackneyville High School he attended Athens College where he was a member of Pi Beta Kappa honor fraternity. From 1943 until 1946 he served in the Army Air Corps as a machine gun instructor and airplane armorer. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1948 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor fraternity. After moving to Montgomery he worked for the Social Security Administration until he retired in 1982. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Liberty UMC with Minister Scott Railey officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with military honors rendered. Pallbearers will be John David Reaves, Robert Whitmire, Brian Ward, Jeffrey Parsons, Timothy Parsons and Joshua Bryan. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
