James Richard “Cowboy Jim” Correll, age 61, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015. He was born in Muskegon on July 21, 1953. Jim graduated from Fruitport High School. He always had an interest in coins and paper money which eventually lead him to opening his own business. Cowboy Jim’s Coin Shop was located at East Broadway and Vulcan. Many folks have attended and enjoyed his Friday night auctions and Saturday flea markets. Always open to new ventures, Jim and two of his friends, Dale and Pat Carr started up a country music show on Wednesday afternoons at his shop. Jim said his mother greatly influenced his love of country music. Jim welcomed other retired musicians and music lovers who would enjoy coming out to play and hear some live country music. It became known as “Cowboy Jim’s Jamboree” and has been a great success bringing music, happiness and friendship to many folks. Jim liked doing things with his friends and family. He gladly hosted poker parties for his buddies. He was especially close to his sister, Cathy, and her husband, Ellery, and enjoyed helping them renovate the home they now live in. He spent a lot of time with them and lived there during his final days. Jim was highly respected and liked by everyone. His easy smile and quiet demeanor endeared him to people from all walks of life. Needless to say, he will be greatly missed. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his siblings: Don (Pam) Correll, Cathy (Ellery) Chandler, Jodi (Len) Gauthier, Chuck (Judy) Correll, Janice (Reyn) DeJonge; dear friends, Lance and Natasha; special nieces and nephews: Matt (Tina) Miller, Jennifer Miller, and Ellery Chandler III. He was preceded in death by parents: Ford and Joy DeGroat; sister, Pam Roomsbury. The family would liked to send a special thanks for Dr. Young and the staff at Hospice of Michigan for their loving care. Very fittingly, the funeral for Cowboy Jim will take place as the Jamboree did, at 12:00pm on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Ever Rest Funeral Home & Chapel (1783 E. Keating Ave., Muskegon). The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Michigan.
Arrangements under the direction of Ever Rest Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel, Muskegon, MI.
