Allan, who was also known as "Giant" or "Pee Wee" depending on the circle, was born Mar. 2, 1923 near the town of Cabri, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of 4 with 2 sisters and a brother.
He was raised on the farm until the family moved into Swift Current where he finished High School in 1941. Popular then as well, he was chosen Senior Watch by the student body. After graduation he held several jobs--in a drug store, "workin' on the railroad", naval reserve in Regina and teaching for 6 years. Giving up on teaching he joined Federated Co-op where he helped establish the Co-op Trust from which he retired in 1978.
While in the navy, three sailors met three girls in the park in Regina. Dad fell for one, Florence Cullum and they were soon married in Jan, 1944. Douglas was born June 1946.
After retirement Allan and Florence moved to the Island, first to French Creek, then to Nanaimo. In his leisure time he kept busy with carpentry, fishing, cooking, his grandchildren and watching sports, especially the Roughriders. But his favourite pastime was chatting with people. "What's your story?" he would ask and the conversation would begin.
After his wife died, he developed a friendship with Marjorie who became a life partner until she passed. Al then moved into Lakeside Gardens.
Grandpa will be remembered with love by his family, son Douglas (Noreen), grandchildren Josh (Sarah), Kendra (Eli), Joel and great grandkids, Ruby and River. Marjorie's family Ed (Jackie), Paul, Penny and Brian (deceased) held a special place in his heart with their many visits. He will be thought of fondly by Brittney and Amy as well as many relatives, friends and neighbours.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Lakeside Gardens. the Palliative Care staff and his longtime physicians, Dr. "Cody", Dr. Hay and Dr. Piemontesi for the care and compassion while under their care.
Grandpa lived a good life. Humour, compassion and wisdom, all part of his life. When faced with a difficult situation one could do worse than ask "What would Grandpa do?"
Rest easy Grandpa.
