It is with heartfelt sadness we announce Gary’s passing on September 23, 2024. He passed away peacefully at the age of 68 with Megan, his wife of 42 years, and son Mike by his side.

Gary was born on August 15, 1956 in Edmonton, AB and moved from Redwater, AB to Kitimat, B.C. in 1966. Gary was one of 5 children born to Norman and Frances (Bilski) Maitland. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Audrey Rice, sister-in-law Caroline Maitland, and nephew Dugan Maitland. He is survived by his wife Megan, sons Matt (Nicole) and Mike (Chrystle), and his beloved grandchildren Isabella, Lucas, Jace, and Noah. He is also survived by his brothers Ken (Rosemary), Twin brother Dale, Roger (Carolyn), Brother-in-law Bill Rice, and many nieces and nephews. Also left to grieve are Megan’s sisters Nora (Andy), Olive and Rosie (Nedjo).

Gary graduated from Mount Elizabeth Secondary School in Kitimat in 1974, UVic Bachelor of Education in 1979 where he was on the Vollyeball team and Masters degree from Gonzaga University 2007. He taught for 12 years in Kitimat and 25 years at Nanaimo District Secondary School. Gary loved to play, coach and referee Volleyball. He volunteered his time to coach for 37 years. Gary also coached baseball and basketball and was a true sports fan. He mentored Student Teachers and Volleyball Referees, was President of B.C. Secondary School Boys’ Volleyball Association and was the Equipment Manager of Nanaimo Minor Baseball.

Gary enjoyed spending time with family, camping, travelling, reading and sports.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Palliative Care Unit for their tender care and all of the physicians and nurses that treated him for the last few years. I would also like to thank our families, friends and neighbours for their support.

A Celebration of Life will be held at BOWEN Park Auditorium, 500 Bowen Road, Nanaimo on October 19, 2024 at 2 pm. You could wear a sports jersey if you would like, but not necessary.

Donations could be made to Nanaimo Hospital Foundation, Red Cross, KidSport Nanaimo or the charity of your choice.
