It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Graham Shuttleworth. Graham was born on March 5, 1935 in West Ham, London, England. He came to Canada at the age of 18 to start a career in banking in Toronto. In his early 20s, he was transferred to Calgary. In 1976, he became an accountant and went into private practice in Calgary. In the early nineties, he moved to Nanaimo where he opened his own accounting firm.
When he was not crunching numbers, Graham had a wide range of interests. He had a great love of food and wine and was a member of the wine purchasing cooperative - Opimian Society. He was active in many activities including darts, billiards, snooker, chess, bridge, camping, field hockey, cycling, cross country skiing, cricket and his favourite, soccer. He played soccer as a youngster in England and continued to play into his late fifties. Graham continued to watch English Premier League, specifically his team West Ham United after he couldn't play anymore. One of the special things Dad did that we all loved was taking us swimming.
He was also involved in the arts with the British Club of Nanaimo, known for their popular variety shows. He had an amazing singing voice and played in many shows as popular stars like Frank Sinatra and Elvis. His outgoing, charming manner also made him a good fit for these performances
His personal philosophy for maintaining a cheerful, optimistic, outlook to life was "Go with the Flow".
Graham is survived by his life partner of 22 years, Trish Cooke, his son, Mike, his daughters, Carol (Ted) and Madeleine (Chris), his grandchildren Aiden, Robin (Emma), Madeleine (Matthew), Aleisia (Ivo), and Sean (Emily).
Our family would like to thank the amazing nurses of the palliative care unit of NRGH for the excellent and compassionate care they took of Dad in his last days, as well as the staff of Oaktree Manor and the VIHA home care support he received while living there.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 301 Machleary Street in Nanaimo on November 14, 2024 at 1:00 pm followed by a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
