With full hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we share the peaceful passing of Jessie Mennie at the age of 98.
Born in Homeglen, Alberta, to Russian immigrants, Jessie’s early life was shaped by resilience, responsibility, and the traditions of the Old Greek Orthodox faith. Raised in a large and hard-working family, she quickly learned the values of discipline, cooperation, and quiet strength-qualities that stayed with her for life.
Jessie built a meaningful career as a secretary eventually retiring from the Delta school board. She began working in Edmonton and later with Canadian Pacific Airlines, where she met and married the love of her life, Leslie Mennie. Together, they shared a life of travel and adventure-from the early years in Whitehorse to raising their family in Tsawwassen, settling in Nanaimo, sailing oceans, and exploring the world.
Jessie was a devoted wife and mother, a proud grandmother, and a loving great-grandmother. She was a skilled bridge player, an avid gardener, a gracious hostess, and a woman known for her wit and enduring grace. Even in her final years, she was active, remained independent, and engaged in life.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Les, Jessie is survived by 4 of her 9 siblings: Polly (and family), Vic (Dorothy and Tyrone), Nadia (John and family), and Tom (Jean and family in Hines Creek). She leaves behind her children Beverly, Genie, and Rick (Jas) and Haida family; grandchildren Katie, Allison, Rocket, Blu; and great-grandson Odin.
She is lovingly remembered by extended family and sister-in-law Barb Leinweber (and family), as well as many dear family, friends, and neighbours across Canada and Australia.
A ceremony will be held at First Memorial on July 21 at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow (details to come).
