It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Sheilagh on February 27th. She gave a courageous battle against dementia which unfortunately she succumbed to. She passed in her sleep where she resided at Chartwell Malaspina in Nanaimo and is now at peace and in no pain. Sheilagh was pre-deceased by her husband Jack Tennyson Carrothers in 1974, her father Daniel Calvert as well in 1974, her mother Hazel Calvert in 1975 and her beautiful sister Joy Newton in 2019.
She is survived by her cousin Beverly McKinnon, daughter Corinne (Bob), son Gary and daughter Deanne. Loving grandchildren Michael, Jacqueline (Harry), Shanna (Rob), Amanda, Stephanie, Katie and Kelsey. Adorable great grandchildren Chloe, Nora, Miles and Harriet. A nephew, nieces, a great nephew and great nieces.
Sheilagh was born and raised in Vancouver. She graduated from Lord Byng High School in 1955 and that same year was a cheerleader for the BC Lions. She met the love of her life, Jack and married him in 1958. Jack was transferred for work from Vancouver to Victoria and again from Victoria to Penticton. It was in Penticton that Jack was tragically taken from the family in 1974. Sheilagh moved the children back to Victoria where she bravely raised their three young children on her own. She was a huge supporter of her children and grandchildren’s’ sporting activities, academic achievements and personal interests. Sheilagh volunteered for many years with the Oak Bay Minor Hockey Association. Jack and her son Gary were both heavily involved in hockey. After the move to Victoria, she worked at Woodward's for a few years and then landed a great job in the nuclear medicine department at the Royal Jubilee hospital that she absolutely loved until forced retirement in 1997.
Sheilagh met her companion of many years Len Nielsen, and enjoyed jazz festivals, movie nights, skiing, swimming, hiking, bridge, concerts and even baking cookies. Len’s children and grandchildren became Sheilagh’s family as well. Sheilagh was so very proud of all of her children and grandchildren but unfortunately dementia took away the ability to know and recognize her great grandchildren. The huge amount of family and friends that Sheilagh leaves behind have more love for her than imaginable.
Sheilagh requested a celebration of life which will be held via zoom at a later date.
