With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Shirley on Jan. 22/2026 at NRGH (Nanaimo).
Shirley was born on Dec. 4, 1932 in a taxi cab going over the High Level bridge in Edmonton, Alberta to Doris and Ambrose Cassidy.
She lived in Ponoka and Wetaskiwin Alberta before moving to Vancouver B.C. in 1948.
Shirley married the love of her life, Rudy LaBonte in 1953 and they started a family consisting of Ian Andre, Mark Stephen and Cheryl Ann. Shortly after the family moved to Penticton and later Victoria.
In 1965 the family moved to Nanaimo where Shirley spent the rest of her life. She loved her ocean view and cherished her beautiful garden.
Tragically, her beloved Rudy lost his battle with cancer in 1983.
Besides being an avid gardener and homemaker, Shirley was also a keen golfer and was actively involved as a member of Nanaimo Golf Club and held positions on the Ladies Executive, was a Director for 3 years and also served on the Ladies Executive of Zone 6 for Vancouver Island for 3 years.
After suffering cancer in 1991, Shirley volunteered for the Canadian Cancer Society in the Visitor's Program. She started the local Breast Cancer Support Group which she facilitated for 11 years. She then volunteered for the Cancer Connection Program in 2002. She also served on the Cancer Care Board at NRGH for 3 years.
In 1996 Shirley met Arn Waller and together they enjoyed travelling all around the world.
Left behind to mourn Shirley are her children; Mark (Mary) and Cheryl Ann, 5 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren, extended family and friends.
There will be no service.
If you wish, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, in Shirley's memory, would be appreciated.
