Elizabeth Thomas Fogg passed away peacefully at her home in Naples, FL on October 21, 2015. She was 94 years old. Betsy, as she was known by her late husband and by her many friends, was born in Cleveland, OH, on April 16, 1921, to Robert P. and Eleanor Thomas. She attended the Laurel School in Shaker Heights, OH, and Hollins University, in Roanoke, VA. She married Joseph G. Fogg, Jr. on December 11, 1945. Mr. Fogg attended the University School in Shake Heights, OH, the Phillips Exeter Academy, and Princeton University. He served in the American Field Service overseas in World War II. Upon his return, he founded a financial printing company which was later sold to Bowne & Co. in New York City.
Betsy and Joe were east side Clevelanders, residing in Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Moreland Hills. As avid golfers, they were members of the Mayfield Country Club and the Pepper Pike Club. In 1964 they bought their first apartment in Naples and have maintained a residence there ever since, becoming full time residents in 1983. Maintaining their golf enthusiasm, they were members of the Hole-in-the-Wall Golf Club and the Royal Poinciana Golf Club. They were non-golfing members at the Naples Yacht Club.
Betsy’s first love was her family. She was the most wonderful mother of four children who survive her: Joseph G. Fogg, III of Naples and Seal Harbor, ME, Judith F. Varty of Naples, Daniel T. Fogg of Pinehurst, NC, and David C. Fogg of Naples and Lexington, KY. She was the beloved grandmother (“Muzz”) to 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a true inspiration to all of these and to all of her many, many friends.
Betsy instilled in all of her children a strong sense of the need to give back to the community. She was active in the very successful White Elephant Sale benefiting the Cleveland Botanical Garden, in volunteer activities at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, and in developing the enriching 20th Century Club in Cleveland. In Naples Betsy continued her volunteer efforts at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, and has maintained a deep interest in the Naples Botanical Garden. Her children carry on her example.
Betsy will be remembered at a memorial service when she is placed to rest beside her beloved Joe and Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
In lieu of flowers, Betsy would like contributions to be sent to the Naples Botanical Garden.
