Bem was born on a houseboat in Naples, Florida on May 14, 1936 and grew up fishing the Gulf with his dad, George Milton Storter, and his “uncle Rob”, Robert Lee Storter. Bem attended Naples High School before enlisting in the Army in 1953 where he served honorably as a Combat Engineer.
After leaving the Army he returned to Naples where he became a successful building contractor, commercial fisherman, and family man. He met his wife, Faye, at the hardware store where she worked as a cashier. They were married in 1961 and together raised three daughters, Rhonda, Kim, and Robin.
Throughout his life, Bem’s passions were woodworking and building boats. He spent most of his time in his workshop, and when he had a vision it always came to life. He was a true craftsman and his work was sought out by locals and collectors alike.
Over the last few years he was most happy just driving “The Bemobile” somewhere in between his home and Kelly’s Fish House, doing odd jobs and visiting with his buddies. He was a modest and noble man, and his integrity and character will continue to guide his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends now that he is gone.
