
Moorings Park community where she lived for 13 years following the 1997 death of her husband of
49 years, Stephen J. Cable.
Born October 3, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA to her parents Dr. James Edwin Purdy and Edith Ballentine
Purdy, Jane moved to Canton, Ohio in 1925 when her father became a physician and surgeon
affiliated with Mercy Hospital (later Aultman Hospital) in Canton.
Jane graduated from Canton's Lehman High School in 1942 where she sang alto in Miss Cogan's
choir and played the cello in the school's orchestra. She enrolled at Cornell University in fall 1942
and by 1945 she was elected the first woman president of Willard Straight Hall. An active and
lifetime member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, she graduated from Cornell in 1946.
Jane married Steve on June 24, 1948, a date that marked her parents' 26th wedding anniversary.
The newlyweds made their home for two years in Cleveland, Ohio where Steve completed his
Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at the Case Institute of Technology and Jane
continued to study cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In 1950, they settled in Canton, Ohio.
Jane held her first position as a staff writer in 1950 with the Canton Repository where her lifelong
talent for writing was recognized. Jane and Steve lived in Canton for 36 years before locating to
Naples, Florida in 1986.
In addition to being a beloved mother and grandmother, Jane was a person of high standards, an
enormously generous heart and a deep Christian faith. Jane was an effective and thoughtful
community leader who was known as a kind and generous person and loyal friend to many. She
never knew a stranger and her love of people was clear from her warmth and smile.
Her life was marked by committed service to her family, God, her friends and her community. Her
energy and goodwill wove a rich tapestry of service touching the lives of many from all walks of life.
Most notably, she served the following groups as a member or leader over the many years of her
active adult life: YWCA of Canton Ohio - president; Junior League of Canton - president; Canton
Symphony Orchestra League; Canton Woman's Club - president; The Congress Lake Club; Aultman
Hospital Women's' Auxiliary; Aultman Hospital Board of Directors; MacDowell Music Club of
Canton – president; Malone College Board of Trustees; Canton HeadStart-founding member; Canton
Woman of the Year-1974; Naples Music Society; Naples FreshStart Center for Abused Women
Board of Directors; Moorings Park Foundation Board of Directors; Naples Royal Poinciana Club -
editor of the 1997 History; Moorings Park Book Club - president; Christ United Presbyterian
Church, Canton; and First Presbyterian Church, Naples.
Among the many ways she gave of her energy and talents, her love of music was a vital sustaining
force in Jane's life. She played in a string quartet in Canton and supported the Cleveland Orchestra,
the Canton Symphony and the Naples Philharmonic for years. She promoted music excellence at the
three churches to which she belonged (Christ United Presbyterian Church in Canton and both First
Presbyterian Church and Bower Chapel in Naples) through gifts and loyal support for the choirs,
children's music, and classical music programs.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by Davis J. and
Elizabeth P. Cable of Davidson, NC, Nancy J. Cable of Jacksonville FL, four grandchildren, Molly R.
Cable of Braintree, MA, Katherine C. Wells and Kathryn S. Field of Pomfret, CT, Andrew W. Cable and
Anne P. Cable of Raleigh, NC, Gretchen C. Wells of New York, NY, and a great grandson due in March.
