David, as he was known, was born in Augusta, Georgia. His family was living in South Carolina with David, an only child, until David was about 8 years old. At that time they moved to Melbourne, Florida, where he was raised and lived the remainder of his childhood years. He graduated from Melbourne High School in 1963. From high school David was given a scholarship from the University of Georgia to play baseball. He played for the Bulldogs for 4 years, including the years when they won the College World Series. David graduated from University of Georgia in 1967.
After college David went on to play a little pro baseball, however, his career was cut short due to an injury during a game requiring immediate surgery.
It was after this that David made his way to Naples in 1967, where he became the assistant Golf Pro at the Country Club of Naples.
After a short time, David found himself as the Golf Pro at the Marco Beach Hotel. It was at the Marco Beach Hotel where David’s career took another turn. He became the owner and operator of all the stores in the Marco Beach Hotel. David remained at the Marco Beach Hotel for 33 years. During that time Mr. Marriott asked him to open and run the shops in the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta. Along with the other stores in Naples, David ran the gift shop in the Edgewater Beach Hotel and both the clothing store and beauty salon in the Registry Hotel.
David found the commuting back and forth between Georgia not to be his thing, so he settled permanently in Naples.
David became bored with retirement and when Alfie Oates approached him regarding his clothing store, David accepted. He became partners and manager of Thoughtful Threads until passing.
He was married to Deborah Dosen. Prior to the marriage to Debbie, David was married to Susan Bertolami Corder for 20 years. They had one daughter Elizabeth Corder Sury of Las Cruces , New Mexico, one grandson, Luke Sury and one granddaughter, Samantha Coveney, also of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and three step-daughters: Susan Stewart in Atlanta, Dana Ranade in Gainesville, and Joanne Bertolami Black in Atlanta.
