Mick was a sharing and caring guy who was always ready to party.  May you peacefully

Uncle Mick was in something of a ’never land’ … for me. Yes, of course, always my uncle.  BUT by his being the youngest of his siblings and me the oldest of mine — Mick kinda sorta seemed like my older brother too.  Besides memories of his youthful energy and perpetual good humor, I so clearly remember a couple gifts he gave me. When I went off to the seminary in the early 60’s, he shook my hand, put his arm around my shoulder, and said “having a priest in the family would be a Blessing to us all.”  And then he slipped me a $5 bill — the equivalent of $50 now!   

If I had remained in “the Sem” there would have been no need for his next gift.  You see, it was 5 years later when he bestowed on me an armor plated book of Catholic prayers, “For God and Our Country”.  As you can see in the photo, that prayer book “looks like it went through a war”.  Well, that’s because — it did—Viet Nam.  After a buddy was wounded in the chest, that ‘inspirational bullet deflector’ was nestled in my left pocket of my fatigue shirt whenever my artillery battery was ‘in the field’.   Some 56 years later, that tattered book is a very special memento that will always have a prominent niche wherever Life leads me. “For God and Our Country … and Our Family” — Requiescat in Pace, Mick … my Uncle, my “brother”.
