     I remember first meeting Grandmother Mildred when she and Carol accompanied Granddaddy to Los Angeles to meet us all.  I think my mother Janice was a little uncomfortable that Granddaddy remarried but Mildred quickly won her over.  Who could ignore how happy Granddaddy was? He was full of life and dancing.   They were so cute.
      With so many miles between us, I didn’t get to see Grandmother Mildred and Granddaddy (and Carol!) nearly as much as I would have liked. We did enjoy seeing them at family reunions and receiving the many Christmas and Birthday cards they sent; often with a few dollars tucked in the envelope.  Even when Granddaddy passed away, she kept those cards coming for years. She did have one concern that we discussed on several occasions. She questioned how people who chose a career in science (which my siblings and I did) could believe in God.  I assured her that it wasn’t a problem and that God likely enjoyed watching us discover how the world was knitted together. I am really going to miss her.  She truly was loved. When I told the kids about Mildred passing away, we talked about their memories with her.  I heard "pizza pizza pizza, " as that was our family's tradition when her great-grandchildren Noah, Sam, Maggie, and Abe were visiting from Duluth, MN.   Maggie also remembered that one time we talked Mildred into a Whopper because I had these great coupon deals.  We would sometimes get flowers at the flower shop by Papa John's and the kids would pick out movies to buy for her.  I am Rick and Sherra's third child.  Granddaddy and Mildred were married when I was two.  My only memory of their wedding is the photo albums with me in my 70s classic fancy leisure suit that she loved to show my family.  They were the only grandparents that I remember well, and they were both very special to me.  I remember especially when they would stop by my parents after square dancing.  I loved their matching outfits and remember as I grew older how happy they were.   Mildred, we love you very much and will really really miss you!


I don't have a specific memory. I just remember spending time at Mildred's house. I remember playing with her toys, looking at her photos, and playing her organ.  She and Homer hosted me and Justin one summer which was special.  We didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Dinner. Coffee. Ice cream. Sitting and chatting.  I have enjoyed these last few years bringing my kids to visit.  To see them playing with the same toys and enjoying the same treats. Mildred just loved us in her simple way.  

This past week I realized how amazing Mildred really was. I always took it for granted that Mildred was my grandmother and a part of our lives. I never knew anything else.  But it takes a special person to have 2 long and meaningful marriages. It takes a special person to bring those two families together like she did.

I was very close to Homer's first wife, Sue (and my Grandmother) who died when I was 10.  As a young child, even I could see how it affected my Granddaddy to be alone, and how much my mom was worried about him.  I remember meeting Mildred for the very first time when they came to our house, and how full of life and energy she was.  At one point (probably not that first visit), she took me aside and said "I'll never try to replace your Grandmother, but I love you and I always will.  You can just call me Mildred, but if you'd like, you can call me Granny."  I could never bring myself to call her Granny because it always made me think of the Beverly Hillbillies, so I just called her Mildred.  She made my Granddaddy so happy and I know that she is the reason he didn't die of loneliness.  She made all of our visits wonderful and she is the only Grandmother my younger siblings ever knew.  Despite having so many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she sent every single one a birthday and Christmas card every year, often with a little money in it.  After Granddaddy died, visiting her helped me remember him as well.  I am so grateful that Mildred married my Granddaddy and became part of our lives.  Goodbye Mildred. Mildred has been in our lives for 43 years since she and my father, Homer L. Jones,  married on  December 30, 1975.  That's a long time to accumulate memories of which I have many.  Some of the most pleasant are our movie nights. I rarely if ever watch a movie at home.  However Mildred, like many her age, loved movies, particularly romantic ones.  Rick's mom did too and instilled in him that same love of movies.  Rick and Mildred could talk endlessly about those 1940 stars in this or that  movie.  In fact, she told us one reason she selected the name Carol for her daughter was because she liked Carole Lombard so much.  After Daddy died in 2000, Rick and I continued going to Naples to visit Mildred, mostly on a Friday night after work.  We'd have a nice supper prepared by Mildred or one I took down, or just go out.  But after supper, she'd put on a movie she had picked out, and although few of my children will believe it, I would also watch the movie (and sometimes be the only one awake at the end).  Rick and I will miss those times with Mildred.

I met Mildred soon after she and Dad married when they along with Carol came to visit us in Southern California. George was stationed near Los Angeles. Janice and her family lived nearby in Santa Monica.

In 1984, Mildred and Dad came to visit us in Spain. Mildred loved square dancing and wanted to see the flamenco dancers perform. Night life in Spain begins about midnight. Mildred survived the Spanish food, the late hour and the thrilling ride in a Spanish taxi back to base housing. Amazingly, she was still smiling the next day.

While they were in Spain we traveled to Portugal  via train. It was quite an adventure. I believe Mildred summed up the trip with the comment "Naples is a nice place to live".

For over 20 years we looked forward to seeing Mildred and Dad when they made the annual trip to the Jones Reunion in Northwest Florida. They enjoyed visiting relatives from their generation  and of course the home cooked food fresh from the garden.   What wonderful memories we all have of those family gatherings.

Mildred was such a wonderful person, and although we were not able to visit often, she made each visit to Naples special.  We're glad she had such a long and fulfilling life, but very sorry to think of a world without her in it.

Mildred married my granddaddy, Homer, before I was born (approximately 4 decades ago).  My memories of her are many as we frequently visited each others' homes over the years.  At her house in Naples, we'd eat, watch television, look at the many pictures of the combined families, play her organ, and always have one of the many special treats she kept around for after dinner.    When she came to our home in Fort Myers for dinner, my mother would make a special dinner (using the good dishes).  Mildred was at every Christmas Eve that I remember growing up, and it was always a good time .  To this day, it is difficult to picture a Christmas Eve at my mom's house without Mildred.

I will always admire how Mildred was frequently thinking of others--especially family.  I will also admire her spirit--speaking her mind and square dancing (all decked out) in my childhood.  She remains in my thoughts, and I wish that I could be there to celebrate her life in more than spirt.

I met Mildred in 1977 when Carol and Billy got engaged.  She was always such a sweet gentle lady to me.  She treated me as her own extended family.  I always knew I could stop by and she would have an open door.  She was a Godly woman in actions and thoughts. She put God first.  She will be missed every day by her family and friends.  She’s where I pray to be one day with our Lord.  My deepest sympathies to the family.  

I have many special memories of growing up visiting Grandmother Mildred and Grandaddy Homer at their home in Naples. We had so much fun fishing, eating sugar cane, playing with cousins and going to the beach. Mildred made the best homemade fried chicken and always put a good meal on the table for us. And of course I loved the “cake table” that she always kept full of sweet treats for us!  She always remembered to send a birthday card to all of her Grankids and Great Grandkids. My children felt so special because she always included a dollar in their birthday cards. I will cherish these memories of her.
