

Born on April 8, 1945 to Vivian and Ashley Swift in North Adams, MA, Peter was a man defined by service, craftsmanship, leadership, and an enduring love of family and community. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1962 and continued his education at Wentworth Institute and Saint Michael’s College.
In 1965, Peter enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country with honor as a Navy Seabee. From 1966 to 1967, he was stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam, before receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. His military service remained a source of pride throughout his life.
In 1966, he married Georgia “Gigi” Button, with whom he built a life in Williamstown, MA, centered on family, hard work, and shared values.
Peter devoted over four decades to his father’s business, Ashley Swift & Sons, beginning his career there in 1970. Through determination and discipline, he rose to become owner and president, serving from 1990 until his retirement in 2011. A master of his trade, Peter held licenses as a Journeyman Plumber, Master Plumber, Master Pipefitter, and Sprinkler Contractor in Massachusetts, as well as additional licensure in Vermont and Connecticut. He took great pride in his work and in the reputation he built through excellence and trust.
Peter was deeply involved in his communities in both Massachusetts and Florida. He was a past member of numerous organizations, including the Williamstown Lions Club, Williamstown Housing Authority, Hoosac Water Quality District, Williams College Quarterback Club, Williamstown Sportsmen’s Club, the Republican Town Committee, Taconic Golf Club, and the American Legion. He was also an active member of Our Lady of the Incarnation Church and St. Patrick’s Church.
After relocating to Naples, Florida in 2011, Peter embraced the next chapter of his life. He remained active in the American Legion, became a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and participated in the Moose Lodge in Bonita Springs. He was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
An avid golfer, Peter found great joy at Cypress Woods Golf and Country Club, where he built lasting friendships and created many cherished memories. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for his principles, his sense of humor, and his ability to leave a lasting impression on those around him.
Peter is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Kennedy (Brian) of Naples, Florida, and Karen Stevens (George) of Hancock, Massachusetts; his beloved grandchildren, Sarah Larson, Alexander Stevens, Thomas Larson, Adam Stevens, and Julianna Kennedy; and his siblings Anne Benedetti, Thomas Swift, MaryJo Belanger, and Patricia Vareschi, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Georgia “Gigi” Swift, and his brother, John M. Swift, Sr.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on April 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be determined and communicated at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Avow Hospice, whose compassionate care supported Peter and his family.
