

Robert Julian Bye, age 90, passed away on March 20, 2026. He was born on November 17, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, to Helen Biel and Julian Bye. The family later moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where Bob attended Cathedral High School and American International College. After graduating from Tufts Medical School in Boston, Bob completed his internship at Bay State Medical Center. He was a neurosurgery resident at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, which included rotations in St. Louis and Yale. Bob returned to Springfield and practiced at Bay State Medical Center and Mercy Hospital for 30 years. He dedicated his life to the care of others. He experienced tremendous satisfaction in making a difference in the lives of his patients and their families.
In 1961, he met his bride-to-be, Cynthia Balut. They were married for 64 years and had three children who they raised in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. In 1996, they retired to Naples, Florida, and spent their summers in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Throughout his life, Bob pursued a wide variety of sports and hobbies with energy and enthusiasm. He played football and baseball in high school and college. He enjoyed golf, tennis, fly fishing and building model airplanes. In retirement, Bob became a Life Master in Bridge. An avid reader of American history, Bob was particularly knowledgeable about the Revolutionary War and Civil War eras. He was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan in his youth and later became a passionate and dedicated Red Sox fan. He attended countless Red Sox games in Fenway Park and spring training games in Florida.
Bob loved spending his summers in Kennebunkport and served as the board chair of his condo association for many years. He loved Maine, with its beautiful ocean and amazing seafood, especially lobster. Bob supported and served on the Board of Trustees of American International College and was honored as Alumni of the Year in 2001. He was a member of the New England Neurological Association and The American College of Surgeons.
Bob is survived by his wife, Cynthia, his children Robin (Seth) Wolpert, Candace (Adrian) Correa, and Jeffrey (Amy) Bye, and grandchildren Isabelle, Evelina and Aliza.
