

He was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 15, 1928, to Steele Fuller Stewart, Sr., and Ruth Sawyer Stewart.
Though he discovered early in life that he had dyslexia, he faced the challenge with perseverance and determination. He graduated from Punahou School in Hawaii and Carleton College in Minnesota, served honorably in the U.S. Army - where he attained the rank of Corporal. He went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He married his beloved Nancy Jane Peterson on June 21, 1958, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Stewart completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins and was in group or private practice for 36 years in the Washington, D.C. area. Admired for his kind and patient manner, Dr. Stewart cared deeply for his patients and at times provided his services freely to those who could not afford care.
Dr. Stewart held several leadership positions throughout his career, including Chief of Staff at Columbia Hospital for Women, D.C., and Associate Clinical Professor of OBGYN at The George Washington University School of Medicine, D.C. Dr. Stewart held leadership positions or served in over ten medical associations including as a Life Fellow of the American College of OBGYN's, Life Member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, Life Member of the American Medical Association and President of the American Cancer Society’s D.C. Division.
In recognition of his professional achievements and service, Dr. Stewart received several honors, including Carleton College’s Distinguished Achievement Award and the American Cancer Society’s St. George National Award.
He was devoted to and deeply in love with his wife of 67 years, Rev. Nancy Peterson Stewart. Together, they raised three children — Steele, Eric, and Heather. Known for his faith and commitment, Dr. Stewart was active in his children’s lives, served as president of their school PTA, and was a deacon and session member at the various churches he joined over the years. One of his greatest joys was playing a supportive role for his wife’s calling to become an ordained minister and serve as a Hospital Chaplain in Maryland and Parish Associate at Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples, Florida.
In 2007, after retiring from private practice, Steele and Nancy moved to Naples, Florida, where he served on the Glenview Retirement Community Board of Directors for eight years.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Stewart enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing tennis, stamp collecting, listening to classical music, always learning, making his much-loved chocolate ice cream, and planning family trips that became treasured highlights of the 1970s. In later years, he and Nancy shared warm fellowship and meaningful connections with many friends at the Glenview Retirement Community and Moorings Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rev. Nancy Peterson Stewart; children Steele Roger Stewart and his wife, Ciloue Cheng Stewart, Eric Peterson Stewart and his wife, Holly Coward Stewart, and Heather Stewart Hull and her husband, Steve Hull; nine grandchildren: Andrew Stewart, Dillon Stewart, Steele A. Stewart, Shelby Stewart, Mary Catherine Stewart, Heidi Hull, Juliette Stewart, Stephen Hull, and Nancy Hull. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, stepmother Una Appleby Stewart; his sisters and their spouses: Sally S. Rogers and her husband, Stephen J. Rogers, Carol S. Dole and her husband, Dr. Kenneth V. Dole.
The family extends our sincere thanks to Moorings Presbyterian Church, Glenview staff, NCH Hospital, Avow Hospice, and the supportive friends who walked with him and Nancy in recent years.
A memorial service was held at the Glenview on August 25, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made through contributions to Moorings Presbyterian Church.
