Born on April 12, 1935, Travis lived a rich and wholehearted life grounded in family, perseverance, and joy. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1957, attending on both track and football scholarships and briefly playing under the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant. During his time at Texas A&M, he became the Southwest Conference pole vault champion, a testament to his dedication and athletic spirit.
Following college, Travis served for seven years as a U.S. Navy pilot, where he discovered one of the great loves of his life — flying. That passion guided him into a distinguished 30-year career with American Airlines. He captained commercial aircraft with skill, composure, and pride until his retirement at age 60.
Travis shared 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Nancy Edwards Thomas, who preceded him in death. Together, they made their home in Euless, Texas and later, Georgetown, Texas, enjoying years of friendship, family, golf, and cheering on the Aggies. After Nancy’s passing, Travis moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to family, and later settled in Naples, Florida, where he spent his final years.
Travis was, above all, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He believed deeply in the goodness of life and was known to say, “There are only two kinds of days: good days and better days.”
He is survived by his daughter Tammie Thomas Kilpatrick (Jim Fried) and son Travis E. Thomas (Susan); grandchildren Ryan Kilpatrick, Mackenzie Thomas, Travis W. Thomas II, and Jake Thomas; and great-granddaughter Alivia. He is also survived by his sister Ann Thomas Schwartz, brother John Thomas, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held in April 2026 in Oklahoma City. Details will be shared when arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Texas A&M University in Travis’s honor.
Friends and loved ones are invited to share memories and messages of condolence.
“Good days and better days.” A life well-lived, and deeply loved.
