Abner was born on November 18, 1931 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Abner M. Landry Sr. and Eoline Andre Landry. He graduated from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. There he excelled academically and realized his passion for music by playing the clarinet in The Golden Band from Tiger Land. He married Shirell Grass Landry on June 21, 1952. Together they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. There he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, graduating in 1955. Abner proudly served as a Captain of the U.S. Army at Heidelberg Army Base in Germany from 1955 to 1958. After beginning a private practice at Baton Rouge General, he realized that the treatment of his patients was enhanced by radiology imaging, so he completed a Radiology residency at Ochsner Foundation in New Orleans in 1965 and ultimately started, along with H. Russell Albright M.D., the Landry-Albright Radiology Group practicing at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans for 31 years before retiring. He chose to enhance the field of Radiology locally by serving in various organizations and served as President of the New Orleans and Louisiana State Radiology Societies and nationally as a member of the American College of Radiology (ACR), ultimately being honored to serve as the President of the ACR in 2000. He also started a satirical publication at LSU Medical School, "The Tiger Rag" and started and ran the Spring Roentgen Conference that hosted all the giants of radiology at the time to help educate the future of radiologic science for many years. Over their long marriage, Abner and Shirrell welcomed five children into their home. His children remember him as a kind, gentle, patient, and forward-thinking father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Abner was accomplished at teaching and often did so at LSU Medical School and also mentored young physicians in the art of being a "Doctor's Doctor." He was a witty and generous individual who loved his family and friends, was a member of the Krewe of Bacchus, season ticket holder of the New Orleans Saints and was passionate about medicine, musical theatre and golf. He also was a long-time member of Metairie Country Club. He was an active and dedicated member of the St. Francis Xavier Church in Metairie, LA as a reader at Sunday mass.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 11 am at Lake Lawn Metairie preceded by visitation from 9-11 am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Abner's life.
