

Angelo Joseph Giorlando, M.D., 96, passed away on January 24, 2023, in the comfort of his home. Beloved husband of Marie Caserta Giorlando of 70 years, father of Joanna M. Giorlando, Dr. Paul J. Giorlando (Mary), Joseph A. Giorlando, Dr. Michael F. Giorlando (Judy), Maria G. Pellerin (Curtis), Angele “Beanie” G. Davis, Felice G. Stokes (Denis), grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, brother of Margy G. Failla. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul J. Giorlando and Josephine Rizzo Giorlando, brother, Joseph A. Giorlando, sister, Marie Rose G. Billeaudeaux and grandson Hugh J. Davis, III.
A.J., as he liked to be called, was born on May 2, 1926, in New Orleans. He attended Redemptorist School, Redemptorist Seminary in Kirkwood, Missouri, graduated from Jesuit High School in 1943. Soon after completing sixty credit hours at Loyola University New Orleans, A.J. was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve as a medical surgical technician in the European Theater of Operations with the First Medical Battalion Company D.
A.J. graduated from Loyola in 1948, where he was a member of Agramante Pre-Medical Society and graduated from L.S.U. Medical School in 1952, where he was a member of L.S.U. Medical Society and Alpha Kappa Kappa medical fraternity. During his last year of residency, he served as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at Charity Hospital. Dr. Giorlando also served as a Clinical Associate Professor for the Department of Pediatrics at L.S.U. and was a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society.
In 1962, Dr. Giorlando served as a member of Mayor Victor Schiro’s Advisory Committee for Services to Exceptional Children. In 2001, he was the recipient of the William H. Stewart, M.D. Distinguished Pediatric Alumni Award honoring his contributions to the care of children in the State of Louisiana.
In 1955, Dr. Giorlando started his private practice of pediatrics, in which he affectionately became known as “Dr. G.” to those who entrusted the care of their children to him. He was a member of the medical staffs of Charity, Baptist, Hotel Dieu, Mercy, Children’s, Pendleton Methodist, and Humana/Lakeland hospitals. Dr. Giorlando also had newborn privileges at Touro, Montelepre, East Jefferson, West Jefferson, Slidell Memorial, and Chalmette General Hospitals.
In 1961, he was instrumental in starting The Father Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R. Cause to sainthood. In 1965 and 1967, he was a member of the excavation team of Fr. Seelos. In 2006 he was inducted into The Order of Seelos Witness-the highest honor accorded by the National Seelos Shrine. In 2009, along with Marie, he received the Blessed Fr. Seelos Volunteer of the Year Award.
Dr. Giorlando became a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1437 in 1949. He received an Apostolic blessing from Pope John Paul in 1969, was inducted as a member of The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem in 1986 and was conferred to The Order of St. Louis Award by Archbishop Philip M. Hannan in 1988. In 1993, Dr. Giorlando was awarded The Golden Jubilee Alumnus of Jesuit High School.
In retirement, he joined the staff of Canon Hospice, and in 2006, received The Canon Hospice Baton Rouge Associate Medical Director of the Year Award.
Dr. G was a devoted pediatrician for almost 50 years before retiring from pediatrics in 2001. He was a devout Catholic who had a deep devotion to Our Lady, The Most Blessed Mother. Dr. G will be deeply missed by all who were touched by his humility, compassion, kindness, sense of humor and love.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA, on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will be in All Saints Mausoleum, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA.
