Alice Louise was born in Houma, LA, and educated by the Marianites of the Holy Cross. After graduation, she attended the College of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, earning a B.A. in Elementary Education (1954). A year later, she began teaching at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, where she remained for two years. She met and married Edmund Randolph Vales in 1956.
She is survived by three of her four children: Ana Maria Vales (late husband, Richard Caldwell), Michael Randolph Vales (Denice Derbes), and Stephen Lapeyre Vales (Rebecca). She was preceded in death by her son, Philip Minor Vales (1997).
Her grandchildren are: Nicholas Hasslock and Noah Hasslock (Erin), Andrew and Christian Vales, Joshua Vales (Maggie), Sarah Vales Petit (Chase), and Jonathan Vales (Lauren).
Her great-grandchildren are: Noah Jr. and Gabriel Hasslock, Kady and Vivian Petit, Jackson and Eden Vales.
Following her husband’s death in 1980, she assumed the responsibilities of managing his construction business, Edmund R. Vales and Associates.
Alice Louise enjoyed participating in the social life of Houma and New Orleans because of her gregarious nature. She was a member of the Orleáns Club and S.Y.C.
Through the Junior League of New Orleans, she enjoyed volunteer work at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Symphony, WYES, and a choir that brought music to hospitals. At her parish church, St. Francis Xavier, she taught Christian Doctrine to lower elementary school children. She fondly remembered teaching children confined to Charity Hospital. Alice Louise was a daily communicant and recited the St. John Paul II Rosary with persistence.
Few could out do her generosity of time, compassion, encouragement of others, and service.
