

America (Merique) Waguespack Ellinghausen, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Lambeth House. A native and life-long resident of New Orleans, Merique was born on August 4, 1929 to the late Felix Pierre Poche Waguespack and the late Maria America Abaunza Waguespack. Sister of the late F. Poche Waguespack, Jr. and Richard S. Waguespack.
Merique graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in 1947 and Maryville College in St. Louis, Mo. in 1951. Immediately thereafter, she entered the Sacred Heart novitiate at Kenwood in Albany, N.Y. on her journey in devoting her life to God. But the Lord had other plans for Merique when she was forced to withdraw from the novitiate as a result of physical ailments. In 1955, she married the late Edwin A. Ellinghausen, Jr.
She is survived by their four children, Edwin A. Ellinghausen III, John Watson Ellinghausen, Maria America (Mary) Ellinghausen Bienvenu and Ann Morrow Ellinghausen Ecuyer. Also survived by ten grandchildren, Victoria W. Ellinghausen, Edwin A. F. Ellinghausen IV, Kathryn A. Bienvenu, Elizabeth B. Ellinghausen, Andrew J. Ellinghausen, Ryan P. Ellinghausen, David M. (Mark) Bienvenu III, Blake L. Ecuyer, William W. Ellinghausen and Stephen M. Ecuyer. Also survived by eight devoted nieces and nephews.
She was a homemaker, a paralegal and a Eucharistic minister. She was a former member of the Junior League of New Orleans and the Orleans Club.
Interment will be private. When conditions warrant, a memorial Mass will be held.
