

Armant C. Touchy, MD passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the age of 93 from respiratory complications. He was married 66 years to Gloria Miller Touchy. He was the son of Henry and Nellie Touchy of Lake Charles, La. Along with his wife, he is survived by five children, Michael (Kathy), Susan, Armant II (Liz), John and Dr. James Touchy. Dr. Touchy is also survived by three grandchildren, Kelly, Dr. Michael (Ashley) and Armant III Touchy. He was in the first graduating class of the then newly opened, McNeese State Junior College. Thereafter, he enrolled and graduated from LSU in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and fought in WW II as a pilot who flew “The Hump” (the Himalayans) in the China, Burma, India (CBI) Theater. Flying over 100 missions, Dr. Touchy won the Distinguished Flying Cross four times, numerous Bronze Stars, as well as US and Chinese medals of honors. He was honorably discharged from the service with the rank of captain. He returned home and enrolled in LSU Medical School and graduated in 1950. After spending five years in general practice in Colorado and Alabama, he returned to New Orleans to complete his OB/GYN residency at Charity Hospital. He then went into private practice and was affiliated with Baptist Hospital. In 1972, Dr. Touchy and other physicians opened the OB/GYN unit at East Jefferson General Hospital and he practiced there until his retirement in 1986, delivering over 4,000 babies during his active career. After retiring, he spent many hours a week at his farm in McNeil, MS, where he raised registered short-horn cattle. At the same time, Dr. Touchy fulfilled his passion for painting. Eventually and up unto just before his death, he completed over 150 original oil paintings, which currently decorate his home in Old Metairie.
He was a past member for the Hump Pilots Association, numerous national, regional, state, and parish medical societies and associations, St. Francis Xavier Parish Church, and Metairie County Club.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church at 12 Noon on Monday, February 2, 2015. Visitation will be from 10AM until 12 Noon prior to the Mass. Interment will be held at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
