Avery McLoughlin Bassich died peacefully at home on April 30, 2018 at the age of 87. Beloved wife of Beauregard Louis Bassich for 64 years and mother of Avery Bassich Corenswet and the late James Beauregard Bassich. A lifelong resident of New Orleans, she was passionate about cooking, gardening, preservation and her family.
Avery graduated in 1948 from Metairie Park Country Day School. She was a member of the Junior League of New Orleans and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, State of Louisiana. As an active member of the Christian Woman’s Exchange Board of Managers for 30 years, Avery was instrumental in the restoration of the Historic Hermann-Grima House 1830 open hearth kitchen. Her extensive research, along with her friend Clare Carruth, allowed visitors to see authentic cooking demonstrations as they would have performed in 1830. She was a past board member of the Friends of the Cabildo and a member of the Louisiana State Museum Acquisition Committee. Avery was also active in several preservation and civic organizations.
The family would like to thank Elizabeth Sewell for her kindness and counsel and thank the many wonderful caregivers who have taken such good care of her over the years. In particular: Rosalie Landix, Angelina Demesme, Raymond Gonzales, Vendetta Honore, Linda Veal and Pam Balthalzar.
Avery was preceded in death by her parents, Louise Avery and Frank McLoughlin, her husband, Beauregard Louis Bassich and her son, James Beauregard Bassich. She is survived by her daughter, Avery Bassich Corenswet, son-in-law, Jay Corenswet and daughter-in-law Cynthia Bassich.
A funeral service will be held in the Chapel at Trinity Episcopal Church at 1329 Jackson Avenue on Friday May 4 at 11am. Visitation will be held from 9:30am until 11am. Burial will be private.
