

Cheryl “Sherrel” Amato Cuccia passed away on August 11, 2025 at the age of 80. She was the beloved wife of Joseph A. Cuccia, Jr. for 59 years. Devoted mother of Charel Cuccia Maheu (Christopher) and Janine Cuccia Macaluso (Nicholas). Loving Grandmother (Gee Gee/Granny) of Christopher Maheu, II (Amanda), Connor Maheu, Catie Maheu, Savanah Macaluso, and Sarah Macaluso D’Angelo (Collin). She was a loving older sister of Richard Amato (late Susan Baldwin Amato) and her nephews, Jason Amato (Kristin), Justin Amato, Joseph M. Amato, Jordan Amato and Joel Amato. She was the sister-in-law to Joanne Quirk, Ronnie Cuccia (Nancy), Jack Cuccia, and Gary Cuccia. Also, survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe and Cheryl did everything together but mostly enjoyed watching their favorite TV series and sitting on the deck in the evenings. Her daughters and grandchildren were her whole world. She was affectionately known as “GeeGee/Granny” to all of them. She never missed an event that they were involved in. She cherished spending time with her family and friends, especially playing cards with the “Card Club Girls” and going to lunch with her Sacred Heart High School girlfriends. Cheryl was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. She had a passion for gardening, sewing, ironing, garage sales, sorting Mardi Gras beads and playing tennis in her younger years. She loved animals, especially “Muffin Ann”, who was her precious dog for many years. She found immense joy in cooking Sunday meals for her family and hosting holiday gatherings. She never met a stranger and always found a way to bring laughter to those around her.
She was a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans. She attended Sacred Heart School for 12 years and later received a degree in bookkeeping. She was a homemaker for many years and had an awesome work ethic, working numerous jobs throughout her life. She cherished working at The Cenacle on the Lake retreat house for 12 years followed by John Zamora III Attorney at Law for the past 18 years. Her outgoing, loving and witty personality touched so many people and will be forever remembered by everyone she met.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Francis Amato and Lorraine Marchal Amato, baby sister, Barbara Amato and sister-in-law, Susan Baldwin Amato.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 1 pm with visitation beginning at 11 am.
