Coleman Samuel Schneider, M.D.

He was born in St. Augustine, Florida on November 16, 1926 to the late Sylvia Shorstein Schneider and Tobias M Schneider. He is survived by the love of his life, Elsa, his wife of 68 years; and their five children, Tobin Schneider, M.D., Michael Schneider (Jill), Ellen Schneider, M.D. (Samuel Alexander, M.D.), Karen Schneider, and Judilyn Schneider; nine grandchildren, Elie Schneider Hirsh (Steve), Casey Schneider Reiss (Yoni), Matthew Schneider, Samuel Schneider, M.D., Hillary Alexander Atkinson (Dylan), Benjamin Alexander, Lexi Alexander, Max Sanz Pastor, and Oliver Sanz Pastor; one great grandson, Jonah Hirsh; and many nieces and nephews.

Cole spent his childhood in Port St. Joe, Florida, and attended the last two years of high school at Georgia Military Academy, where he graduated in 1944 as class valedictorian. He graduated from Tulane University and then from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1950. After a year of internship and a year of residency in Internal Medicine, Cole enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. He was assigned to the Radiology Dept. of the Naval Hospital in Puerto Rico and was discharged in 1954 as a Captain. After his military service, Cole began a Radiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and received a Graduate Medical School degree in 1955. At Penn, he met and married his beloved Elsa. In 1959, they and their two sons moved to New Orleans where he began 40 years of a distinguished career in the private practice of Diagnostic Radiology. Cole was President of the New Orleans Radiology Society, a Fellow in the College of Radiology and a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society. After his retirement in 2000, he taught Radiological Anatomy at Tulane Medical School. Cole was highly admired and respected by fellow physicians. He was known for his intellect, humor and sharp wit; had an encyclopedic knowledge of WWII and at trivia he couldn’t be beat. Cole was a wonderful husband and a kind and loving father and grandfather. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Touro Synagogue, 4238 Saint Charles Ave. in New Orleans, on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 12:00 noon, with Rabbi Katie Baumann officiating. The interment was held in Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. III.
