

Donald James Hayes passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on April 3, 2026, at the age of 88. He is survived by his loving wife, Anna Marie Drago Hayes, of 64 years and his children, Rosemary H. Hernandez (Keith), Donna H. O’Brien (Timmy), Martin Hayes (Erin) and Ann Marie H. Pierce (Chris). He was the cherished grandfather of Kaitlin Novak (Stephen), Lindsay Marks (Brice), Stephen Gallioto (Kerry), Christina Ruel (Robby), Brant O’Brien (Nikki), Madyson San Salvador (Justin), Zackery Hayes (Molly), Taylor Herty (Mary), Alexis Anthony (Tristan), Jeremy Pierce (Molly), and Emily Duhe’ (Steven). He was the proud great-grandfather of Elsie Novak, Anderson Novak, Davis Novak, Rosina Marks, Elizabeth Marks, Quinten Ruel, Chandler Ruel, Braylin San Salvador, Emma Pierce, Thomas Pierce, Margot Duhe’ and Everett Duhe’ and joyfully awaiting the arrival of Baby Herty.
Donald was preceded in death by his Mother Mary C. Dempsey, his sister, Mary Louise Hayes, half siblings, Josephine Allen, Joseph and John Dempsey and step siblings, Margaret Sherry and Richard Dempsey.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Donald’s greatest joy in life was his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren especially lit up his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Donald proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, faithfully serving his community. He later continued his career with EKCO Electrical Contractors for 22 years until his retirement, which allowed him to enjoy the things he loved the most--spending time with this family and pursuing his passion for woodworking. He will be remembered as a quiet, loving and devoted family man whose kindness and strength touched everyone who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love him.
The family would like to thank Sage Lake Assisted Living and Compassus Hospice for their dedicated care and comfort given to him.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 20, 2026, from 10am – 12pm at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon, followed by a Christian burial at Metairie Cemetery.
