

Dorothy Singer “Dotty” Jacobs passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at home. She was born on February 5,1933 to William and Esther Singer in Cleveland, Ohio, moving with her family at age 2 to Miami, FL. Dotty was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Marvin Louis (Buddy) Jacobs in 2013; and by her younger sister Marlene Stone and older brother Larry Singer. She is survived by her 3 children Betsy Rubenstein (Randy Garland) of St. Louis, MO; Barbara Aland (Jack) of Birmingham, AL and Andrew and Carmen Jacobs of New Orleans. She is also survived by brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Dr. Kenneth and Ellen Jacobs, Sylvia Shepard, and Ellie Jacobs all of Nashville, TN. Loving grandchildren are Billy Rubenstein (Weiwei), Michael Rubenstein (Jodi), Daniel Rubenstein (Katie), Emily Kupperman (Zach), Rachel Aland (Cord Briggs), Laura Aland, Maggie Aland (Will Johnson), Erica Bordeaux (Pierre), Jessy Miller (Bobby), Jenny Jacobs, Sissy Jacobs and Claire Rufin. Dotty is also survived by her 15 great grandchildren (ages ranging from 12 years to 1 week) and many loving nieces and nephews.
Dotty and Buddy were married in 1953, living in Nashville for a year until Dotty graduated from Vanderbilt University at which time the newly-weds moved to New Orleans, where Buddy managed the Royal Castle Hamburger Restaurants. After Royal Castle sold in 1967, Buddy owned and managed commercial real estate, while Dotty continued to volunteer with many community organizations including NCJW, Jewish Family Services, Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans serving on the boards of Newman School, the LPO, Tulane, Jewish Family Services and Hospice New Orleans.
Once her children were all out of the house, Dotty decided to return to school, and was a 1982 graduate of Tulane Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review, graduating with honors Magna Cum Laude and Order of the Coif at age 49. She went on to a distinguished 20-year career at Sessions Fishman Nathan where she was greatly admired by both her colleagues and her clients. After retiring from practicing law, Dotty and Buddy spent the summers as well as much of the winters in their second home in Aspen, CO where they enjoyed hosting their children and grandchildren as well as skiing in winter and attending Aspen Music Festival concerts in the summer.
After a private family burial that morning, a memorial service will take place at Touro Synagogue, 4238 St Charles Ave., on Tuesday, July 25 at 3:00 pm with Rabbi Katie Bauman officiating.
